County Core

Emmet County sits at the top of Michigan's northwest Lower Peninsula, between Little Traverse Bay and the Straits of Mackinac. The legislature laid it out in 1840 as Tonedagana County, renamed it Emmet in 1843 after the Irish patriot Robert Emmet, and organized it under that name in 1853. Lumber, limestone and the Great Lakes passenger steamers built the early towns; the resort associations that followed set the pattern of summer homes that still shapes the county's building stock today.
